What was the first dish you learned from your mom? For me, it was a simple French toast recipe. It’s easy to make, and my childhood days were filled with the whiff of vanilla and eggs coming from French toasts.
As I took command of the kitchen years later and started experimenting with the regular dishes, I found many variations for this classic recipe. Here, I will start with the usual recipe and then talk about the variations.
French Toast Recipe Ideas You Can Try At Home
As I was growing up, Sundays were special. We used to start the day with French toast for the breakfast. My mom used to say that bread slices that are at least one day old are the best for French toast. She also taught me how to pick the slices with small pores for better absorption of milk and eggs.
Nevertheless, it’s time to explore how to make the French toast recipe in the simplest way and how to give it some twist.

Making the classic French toast is very easy, and it takes around 5-7 minutes to get ready. I use sandwich bread slices for this recipe (for four).

- Then, add ½ cup milk to the mix and give everything a good stir.
- Dip four slices of bread in the mix and cook them on non-stick pans. Make sure that both sides of the slices have brown marks.
I serve French toast with homemade spicy syrup. You will find many tutorials online on how to make an “Easy Spiced Syrup.” This is how I make it at home.
- Take one cup of pancake syrup.
- Mix it well with 1/4th teaspoon of ground cinnamon and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. The heat of cinnamon is the stand-out feature of this sauce.
- Warm it in the microwave for around 30 seconds. The sauce is ready!

- First, take 8 slices of brioche bread.
- Then, take 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg (properly ground), and two to three tablespoons of sugar. Create a nice mix with all these ingredients.
- Take 4 tablespoons of butter and let it melt on a skillet. Keep the flame medium so that the butter does not get burnt.
- Next, make a good mixture of four eggs, ¼ cup milk, ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, and the spice mix. Make the mixture in a shallow bowl so that you can dip the slices easily in them.
- Dip the bread slices into the mixture and fry on the skillet until both sides turn brown.
Serve the French toast with syrup or condiment of your choice. Maple syrup with a hint of cinnamon works the best for me.
