I know how hard it is to balance a busy work life. Between long online meetings and daily travel, I do not have time for a long 10-step skincare routine.
However, I notice that work stress, lack of sleep, and computer screens hurt my skin first. As a result, I often see early wrinkles, adult pimples, and dull skin.
When I want real results that science proves, I always use retinol.
Skin doctors call this ingredient the best choice. It makes the skin renew itself faster. It helps your body create more collagen. And it clears out blocked pores.
Basically, it truly changes your skin.
But I also know that retinol is very strong. If you use it wrong, it causes redness and peeling skin. No working woman wants a peeling face right before an important work meeting.
So, in order to get the best results, you must know exactly how to use it. That is why I wrote this guide.
When To Use Retinol In Skincare Routine As A Working Woman?

I first started using this potent ingredient when I turned 25. And my Gen Z sister (I know I almost always bring her up in every article I write) told me that I was already late.
Too late, didi!
Besides, when I first used it, I made the grave mistake of not consulting any dermatologist. I thought I knew my skin and how retinol works. What a blasphemy!
And FYI, I paid the price. Breakouts, pigmentation, and an extreme level of under confidence (that obviously followed) swallowed me whole. And this continued for nearly a month. I did not understand where I went wrong.
But now I do.
So, I want to show you exactly when to use retinol in skincare routine steps so you get glowing skin without ruining your work week.
Also, I have talked about the following topics at length:
- How to build a skincare routine?
- When to use toner in your skincare routine?
- The best morning skincare routine for busy women.

When To Use Retinol In Skincare Routine: Day Or Night?
I use retinol only in my nighttime skincare routine. In fact, I never use it during the day. I have two simple reasons for this.
First, sunlight destroys retinol. The sun breaks down the product the moment it hits your skin. This makes your expensive cream useless. If you use it in the morning, you waste your money.
Second, retinol brings fresh, new skin cells to the surface. These new cells burn very easily in the sun.
By using retinol only at night, I protect my skin. Also, the ingredient works best while you sleep because your body repairs itself at night.
What Step Does Retinol Come In A Nighttime Skincare Routine?

I always apply my skincare from the thinnest product to the thickest product. Therefore, retinol goes in the middle of my routine as a treatment.
I follow this exact, simple order every single night:
- Double Cleanse: First, I use an oil cleanser to wash away heavy makeup and dirt. Next, I wash my face with a gentle face wash and water.
- Wait and Dry: I dry my face completely with a clean towel. Then, I wait 5 to 10 minutes.
- Apply Retinol: I take a small, pea-sized amount of retinol. I spread it all over my face. I always stay away from my eyes and the corners of my mouth.
- Moisturize: I wait 2 minutes. Finally, I put on a thick moisturizer to lock in water and protect my skin overnight.
Why Must Skin Be Completely Dry Before Applying Retinol?
Wet skin acts like a sponge. It drinks in products too fast and too deep. Because retinol is very strong, deep absorption causes burning, peeling, and red skin.
I cannot have a peeling face at work. Therefore, I always wait for my skin to dry. Dry skin keeps your face safe from irritation.
Application And Routine: How Many Times A Week Should You Use Retinol?

When I start using retinol, I always go very slow. Doing it regularly is better than using too much at once.
If you are a beginner, follow this simple weekly schedule to keep your skin safe during the work week:
| Routine Phase | Weekly Frequency | My Best Practice Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1-2 | 2 nights per week | Space the nights out. For example, use it only on Sunday and Wednesday nights. |
| Weeks 3-4 | 3 nights per week | Use it every other night if your skin feels fine. |
| Week 5 and Beyond | Up to nightly use | Only use it every night if your skin has no redness or pain. |
I keep this 2-night schedule for the first two weeks. If my skin does not get red, I move up to three nights a week. Over a few months, I slowly build up to using it almost every night.
What Is The “Sandwich Method” And Should You Use It?
The “Sandwich Method” is a great trick.
I highly recommend it for sensitive skin or beginners. It stops your skin from peeling and getting dry.
To do this, I put my retinol between two layers of face cream:
- Layer 1: I put on a light moisturizer right after washing my face.
- Layer 2: I wait for it to dry. Then, I put on my pea-sized drop of retinol.
- Layer 3: Finally, I put on another layer of my regular face cream.
This cream creates a shield. It slows down the retinol so it does not hurt your skin. But it still works well over time. It saves working women from having flaky skin during office hours.
Can You Use Vitamin C And Retinol On The Same Day?
Yes, you can use both. Together, they keep your skin looking young. But you must never mix them together at the exact same time.
Vitamin C needs an acid environment to work. Retinol needs a neutral environment. Mixing them at the same time stops both from working. It also hurts your skin badly.
Instead, I separate them by day and night:
- Morning Routine: I use Vitamin C. It protects my skin from city pollution and dirt during my morning travel.
- Evening Routine: I use Retinol. It fixes my skin cells and builds collagen while I rest.
Do I Need To Wear Sunscreen If I Work Indoors In Front Of A Computer All Day?

Absolutely, duh! As I have already mentioned, sunlight breaks down retinol. And it is not just sunlight – it’s the UV rays that you need to be scared of. I always use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher as part of my morning routine.
Retinol exposure to light leads to skin sensitivity.
But even when you are indoors, near the window, the windows don’t completely shield you from the sun’s rays. Even the rays responsible for skin aging and darkening can penetrate through glass.
In addition, the blue light that comes out of the computer and phone screens secretly plays a part in damaging your skin. Yes, you read that right. They can also contribute to the formation of dark spots on the skin.
And because of this, applying a layer of sunscreen in the morning is essential to keep your face safe.
What Ingredients Should You Never Mix With Retinol At Night?
To protect my skin, I never use exfoliating acids (like glycolic acid or salicylic acid) on the same night as my retinol.
Acids scrape away dead skin cells. Mixing that with retinol causes a broken skin barrier. As a result, your face will sting and burn. I use my acids in the morning instead, or on nights when I do not use retinol.
When Should You Temporarily Skip Your Retinol Application?

Regular use is important, but you must know when to stop. I always skip my retinol in these three situations:
- Before big beauty treatments: I stop retinol 3 to 5 days before getting a professional facial or chemical peel.
- Before facial waxing: I stop using retinol 5 to 7 days before waxing my eyebrows or upper lip. If I do not stop, the wax can rip off my skin.
- When my skin is damaged: If my face stings from winter wind during my travel, I stop retinol immediately. I use only simple creams until my skin heals.
Establishing Your Mon-Fri Skincare Balance
Using strong skincare products does not have to be scary or complicated. Because I know exactly when to use retinol in skincare routine choices, I keep my skin safe from pain.
Meanwhile, I get a natural glow.
I use the morning for protection (Vitamin C and sunscreen). At the same time, I use the night for fixing my skin (Retinol and heavy cream).
